When I first started writing, I was all about writing contests. They were fun and it was a great way to get feedback on my WIP. It was also a great realization that I need an editor. Like, now. Before I query and before I find beta readers, I need an editor to poke and prod until every unnecessary “that”, every typo and every plothole is buffed out. Where do I begin to look?
Well I have friends that have offered, but they are friends. They will not give me the brutal honestly I need to pound my WIP into submission. Do I pay someone? Do I find someone who will work for royalties? Do I take an editing class? What do I do?
Torn is in its first round of editing. God Bless my editor. She is not only helping me make this a great book, but she also has the terrible task of going through and taking out all the tiny mistakes that would have gotten hacked had I sent this to an editor before I queried. But I didn’t. So now she is stuck with the grunt work. And I love her for it J My point is take the time, do the research, find the editor, the right editor, and have your work edited BEFORE you query. It’ll save you a lot of “what ifs”. And your first-round editor will thank you for it later.
